Well Durga Puja is a big festival in India especially in Bengal . Mahalaya is a kind of starting of durga puja
Its believed that a Demon called "Mahisasur" attacked the heaven and the gods goes to Maa Parvati and Shiva . Thats how the Goddess Durga (Maa Parvati's another attire) is introduced and she went to fight mahisasur and killed him .
