Title: Messages for the server
Post by: raz0 on May 03, 2008, 12:28:11 PM
elbrujo and Snipe were talking about messages being display in the server (http://gta-mp.littlewhitey.com/index.php?topic=620.msg8039#msg8039) every so often some time ago. We thought this was a great idea to remind people about all the things that go on outside the server like these forums, the map testing blog, the mtastats page and so on.

As far as the scripting of the bot goes - that's all done. The problem is that we need some messages to display. That's where you guys come in. We thought, why not leverage the community and ask what they'd like to see. What are your ideas?

A message will be displayed every five minutes on rotation. That is, if we have three messages in rotation they will all be displayed in succession and when the last message has been displayed, we'll start over with the first message again. Personally I'd prefer messages that encourage participation in the community outside the server, especially these forums. It would also be best if instead of linking straight to say the the forums (gta-mp.littlewhitey.com) or the stats page (mtastats.littewhitey.com) you'll link to the main site; that is mtasa.littlewhitey.com. This way people will only have to remember one address and they can reach everything from there anyway.

The word is yours. Give us your suggestions! :)

I agree with raz0.

In terms of advertising all the external stuff there should only be one URL used - http://mtasa.littlewhitey.com/
Otherwise i think people will be bamboozled - You could still have different messages, ala:

"Sign up for stats at http://mtasa.littlewhitey.com/"

"Join the forums at http://mtasa.littlewhitey.com/"

or something like snipes messages etc.

Maybe there also could be a message telling players how to deal with cheaters, not sure what you'd put though... do you want every newb to know the "knuckles plop raz0 cygnus - blahblah is cheating" thing? i guess it could lead to unwanted "admin" spam from your point of view....?

right and if you can change the home's page ( the text) it will be nice. right now, it's "short"

(https://littlewhiteys.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi40.servimg.com%2Fu%2Ff40%2F11%2F00%2F88%2F28%2Flwserv10.jpg&hash=7e202b3cdf99303d339fbf2bab4a4155b463fa23) (http://www.servimg.com/image_preview.php?i=154&u=11008828)

for the message, you can have more fun in your text i think.
like: you like cookies? share it on http://mtasa.littlewhitey.com/
you want to play at gta4 but you don't? share it on http://mtasa.littlewhitey.com/
you want to send a kiss to the admins, come on at http://mtasa.littlewhitey.com/
 ;D :P

Sounds great! But a new message every 5 minutes... hmmm... might be a little too often? I guess we'll just have to wait and see :)

i'm right with accident about the  message every 5 mins. it could be every 15mins perhaps or 10 if you want. ???

and we can have the top 3 on every race on the server!

Well, it all depends on how many messages we end up with. Say we have only one message to display, then 5 minutes is a bit low, yes. But what if we end up with, say 6 messages? Then one every 15 minutes will mean that a message will only repeat every 1½ hour! That's a long time. Anyways, there are already several messages being displayed every time the map changes, and that's typically less that 5 minutes apart.

and we can have the top 3 on every race on the server!
Huh? :D

oops, it's not the place for these comments! i just talk about the message when a race started. you have the record but you can have the top3's time for this map. :P

Messages are online!

Snipe: Didn't go for yours, since they were a bit too long. We need something short so people can read it quickly while racing and before it scrolls by.

Brujo: Your ideas were just a .. tad too silly. Funny though. :p

As for your concerns about the 5 minute delay between message; well, we will try with 5 minutes for now. If it turns out it's too much spam, we can always change it. As far as I can see, it seems perfect for a full server. Could be that it's a bit excessive with fewer players. If it's too much, we might also implement a tiered delay, so that 0-10 people: 15 minute delay, 11-20: 10 minute delay and 20-: 5 minute delay. We'll see for now.
