Title: Touchscreen - your recomendations
Post by: tezza on February 04, 2012, 08:51:35 PM
My girlfriend is looking for a touchscreen (which i will most likely end up paying for) i was wondering what you guys would recommend. These are the requirements.

As large a screen as possible, without being stupid.
Needs to be able to play/stream videos or very low requirement games.
Doesen't require 3G, but needs to connect to wi-fi.
Touchscreen preferable but open to needing to use pen.
No lag when using basic pograms eg word processing etc.

Ohai Tezza!
If you wanna buy a tablet you'll have two options, either iOS (on ipad) or Android (on several brands such as Samsung, Motorola, blackberry's playbook, HTC, Huawei, and others).
If you wanna get more functionality go for Android. The best Android tablet maker by far is Samsung. If you wanna get a little smoother touch response (and I mean little!) go for iPad. Here's a list of all I can remember atm, if you have any other questions ask nao!

Advantages of Samsung Galaxy tab (10.1, 8.9, 7.7, and 7.0 - not the old "phone tab") over the ipad:
- Full HD display (compared to 768 x 1024 on ipad), I know a friend who has an iPad who wow'ed when he saw my display.
- Bluetooth for sending and receiving files (only streaming music on iPad).
- Applications for downloading music and youtube videos (restricted by apple to get $$ from itunes).
- Customization (several home screens, ability to change backgrounds and add live widgets, e.g: news, weather calendar, social networking vs. the ipad's wallpaper on the unified iOS screen)
- Tathering (sharing your 3g or wireless connection with other devices, through Wifi, bluetooth, or USB).
- Better cameras on all models (different MPs on each model, but all are better than ipad's)
- GPS on all models (only on 3G models on ipad)
- File management (copy and paste just like any mass storage device vs. must have itunes)
- Variety of sizes (ipad is 8.9 inches, you can select between 7.0 up to 10.1 on the Galaxy tab).

Some models have even more advantages (eg: SuperAmoled screen on 7.7), but in all cases the advantages mentioned above apply on all models.

Advantages of ipad:
- Smoother touch response. (you have to check for the response of both irl, don't depend on videos and recommendations).
- iPad's magnet cover is more available than tab's.

P.S.: 3G only is not an option on both devices, you either get wi-fi only or 3G+wi-fi.

Apple is not what its cracked up to be. There is far better choices out there like the Galaxy tab for example. Apple has lots more restrictions than other tabs has as jOjO has pointed out iTunes is just 1 of them.

Anyway, just Google Tablet PC. There is tablets out there that run on Windows instead of iOS or android. It might be more useful for what you are looking for with the word processing etc. etc.

Cheers, she was already looking towards the samsung and that'll probably be it. She had a tablet with windows that lasted almost 3 years but mostly looking for something smooth and gimmicky now.

Then i think you should go with your gut and what your girlfriend is actually looking at. The Samsung galaxy tab. Apple is more of a US product anyway.

+1! I didn't bother about mentioning windows because it's not really fun when compared to Android. xP

I recommend the Sony Tablet S over the Samsung Galaxy Tab. But that's because I would use it more for gaming, as the Sony Tablet is PlayStation certified. Both Tablets run around the same price.

1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor
16GB or 32GB, priced at $499 and $599
1GB of internal memory
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
9.5 inches long, 6.8 inches wide and a thin 0.3 inches deep
1.3 pounds
headphone jack
Micro USB port
USB card reader
Android 3.1

P.S. I would never recommend a over priced Apple Product. The even sadder thing is that my New phone destroys every tablet on the market at this moment.. Which makes you wonder whats up?

Cheers, we'll have to consider it, might just end up going for the cheaper one if theres not much in it.

I suspect the ipad is an impressive piece of technology but i just don't like the idea of giving money to apple.
