Title: Windows 8 - worth it?
Post by: [JOKER]Miczi on November 01, 2012, 01:25:52 PM
Anyone tried it? I just recieved my new laptop with no system on it, since my school offers me that Dreamspark software. I wanted to download windows 7, but it says "temporarily unavailable" (lol, wondering if it's a coincidence or they want students to test Windows 8 :P ), so I'm downloading Windows 8. Or should I wait till 7 is back available? What do you think?

Why windows 8, since win 7 looks good works perfect and run all softwares and games there is no point from instaling windows 8...

Because I can't download windows 7, and I really need to do it now, when Im at home and have another pc :P Plus, according to tests, windows 8 is much faster and eats less RAM than 7. We will see.

I installed Windows 8 two days back and still on it. Yes, it's faster than windows 7(not that much, a little) but the booting up is way faster than windows 7. I upgraded from windows 7 and the best thing is that all the drivers and softwares were working well with no errors. UI of windows 8 is much of use for Touch screen hardware. Start Button from windows 8 is gone but you can get the start button on Windows 8 from here  http://windows8startbutton.com (http://windows8startbutton.com)

Still to figure out what all extra can be done in windows 8.

This^^ is always the best option. As PC's these days are way too different; so you can't really ask "How it works?". :P

ps. Now that you mentioned it, I might try it out aswell.

Sounds like you have no choice. I highly doubt Microsoft will put Windows 7 back on Dreamspark (at least not anytime soon!), they're pushing Windows 8 way too much.

Windows 8 has a bit of a learning curve when coming from Windows 7. Things can be made easier if you get used to using the Start button on your keyboard, typing part-name of a programme and hitting enter.

Gestures on your laptop track pad also help so make sure you have the latest drivers e.g. I can swipe from right to bring up charms bar, from left to alternate programs etc.

Hmh, win 7 is still in the dreamspark lists here, 4 different versions of pro, another 2 with srvpack 1 and another 2 including server 08.

A friend of mine recently tried 8 and he said it's performance is better, and it takes just 10 to 15 minutes to completely transform it back to win 7 handling.

Meh, I'm having troubles with downloading this shit, and after googling I see I'm not the only one. I had a few errors while downloading (whole day to download 3gb, wtf?!) but now I finally managed to finish it! I was so excited! WOHOOO!

Then I got this:
"Unpacking File: D:\windows 8\pl_windows_8_x64_dvd_915436.sdc
CRC not valid2"
"Cannot unpack file. Please, download it again."

This was one of those moments I seriously considered throwing my monitor through the window. The Secure Download Manager deleted the SDC file instantly, not even giving me chance to somehow convert it by myself or something like that. The support have no idea how to fix it. People say that it doesn't matter what version you download, it just happens sometimes. For downloading errors they suggested setting a proxy, and so I did. So, now I'm downloading the file again, using default settings. Shit, there is a shining new Lenovo Y580 laying on my desk unproductively, collecting dust, cause I have no Windows on it -.-
Wish me good luck.

K. Proxy worked, guess it worked as a shield stopping the signal from getting fucked up by the microwave.
Meh, seriously, now I'm having troubles installing this shit:

Im in the partition creating part, and I have this:
Disc 0 - Unallocated space: 930.4GB
Disc0 Partycja 1: Lenovo_Part: 1.1GB OEM (protected)

of course I'm translating it from Polish. When I click "new", a window shows up. I can set the size of the partition, so I set it to 50000mb, then I click "ok", it asks me if I want it to be a system partition, so I click yes, the window disappears and... that's all. The partition is not created ;/

When I try to install it anyway, it says "Windows cannot be installed on this disc. This disc contains a table of MBR partition. In systems with EFI interface, system windows can be installed only on GPT discs."
Which is like "blablabla it won't work" to me ;/

Any help? I think I will look for some other stuff to create partitions...

The only reason why I bought Windows 8 was the 15€ discount price I was entitled cos I bought my laptop during summer. It's not as bad and some people claim it to be but neither it's particularly innovative.

It's feels little bit faster than Windows 7 and some features are little bit better than on Win7. It's bearable to use if you mostly stick to traditional desktop side of UI and it's Win8s' saving grace UI-wise. Metro or w/e is called nowadays is total crap. What makes Metro totally useless to me is it forcing to run every fucking program full screen and not being able to see what programs are running on the background without alt + tabbing cos there's no taskbar. When I gave Metro chance it irritated me on my laptop's 11.6" screen so I can imagine how much it would irritate and frustrate me on my desktop pc's 27" screen. I would like to know who was the idiot who decided that it's cool to run every fucking program full screen. As long as Metro apps stay full screen I wont be buying or using any Metro app that Windows 8 doesn't force feed me. Start screen is bearable if you manually delete shitloads of useless tiles that programs fill it with cos Microsoft thought that there's no need for folders...sheesh.

Windows 8 doesn't feel particularly great upgrade compared to Windows 7. I might reinstall Windows 7 back to my laptop when/if Windows 8 fubars itself.

It's pretty cool ;) It wakes up from sleep in less than a second, it looks like turning the monitor on :P And it's extremely fast in w/e I do, however it's not really about the system, it's about pc being clean. I like the news thingy, loads of newspaper reachable by one click, and it looks kind of "modern" - the notifications sliding from the edge of the screen, etc. etc., I have to say I really like it. The only thing that annoyed me so far was internet explorer - it looks cool, but when I played a music video on youtube, it paused it everytime I minimized the browser, so that sucks. Luckily Firefox works just fine ;)

I don' regret installing it so far ;)
Funny thing aboue Lenovo, speakers in my 10 inch toshiba netbook are like twice as loud as those in Lenovo Y580 :P
Btw, Metro doesn't iritate me, it looks quite cool to me.

That was the windows 8 preview.

The official real release was a couple days ago i think. (the release was somewhere in November if im not mistaken)

Anyway i would not bother with Windows 8 just yet. Theres alot of things that still need work. Drivers, programs, games etc etc they all need patching or work done to work on windows 8.
Best thing to do is wait about 6 months and then do a multi/dualboot with windows 8 and see if u like it.

If any of you have a recently bought PC or laptop then you should buy the windows 8 upgrade that they are selling for like 10 to 20 bucks (for me its 14,99 euro)

personally i dont like the way windows 8 looks. Specially the screen with all the blocks etc etc. Looks to damn cheap for my taste. Ill probably bother with windows 8 in the next months i got a copy on my MSDN account anyway including alot of other microsoft software.
