Title: Front Panel USB not working.
Post by: ankit on February 02, 2013, 05:27:34 PM
Well, last night i was having some trouble with the front panel audio jack and i fixed that somehow. But while doing that i also removed front panel USB wire from the motherboard to make some room.
After that i plugged everything back in it's exact position. But sadly when i turned on my PC, front panel stopped working.
Any help would be appreciated here.

Motherboard: MSI 760GM-P21

Maybe you didn't plug it well OR maybe you burned the pins when you removed or pluged the wires.

Use the onboard panel :)

Basically all i'd think of either. Most propably something went wrong with the cables.
Did you have a look yet if the windows device manager even finds that front panel device? Maybe it's drivers just need a manual reinstall.
Had a more or less similar problem with my relative's old machine, where front sound didn't work while front usb still did. However this was a problem of missing soundcard drivers, so the onboard soundcard jacks wouldn't work either. Solved it by abandoning that entire pc and using an old machine instead :/

Before you attempt anything else. Are you 100 % positive that you plugged in everything the way it is supposed to ? Because even the tiniest mistake with frontpanel connectors on the motherboard will fry your entire motherboard including your CPU. Which will probably set you back a rough 300 to 400 euro or more if anything else is fried.

1st: Make sure you didnt switch the connector upside down. Needs to be plugged in the right way and not turned. Theres a reason the wires are color coded (different voltages etc etc)
2nd: Did you mess with any BIOS settings?
3rd: Did you reinstall the driver software?
4th: Next time you got a problem work it down systematically. Meaning you start with the software first. Then you check if something is disconnected or not. Unplugging and replugging is the last thing you do since thats the part you can make most of the mistakes in like you have experienced now.

Actually i think you'd get a bluescreen before things starts to BURN, but i'm not sure

1. I did connect all the wires correctly.
2. I tried looking into the Device Manager but those ports are not even showing there.

Guess, i have to use onboard panel now.

You can think what you want but i actually know this stuff.
Bluescreen is software related. You will not encounter those when your problem is hardware related.

1. I did connect all the wires correctly.
2. I tried looking into the Device Manager but those ports are not even showing there.

Guess, i have to use onboard panel now.

1. Ok
2. That is because you had those drivers installed before. You need to uninstall those drivers and then reinstall them.
3. It might help to reinstall windows but i dont think you would want that.
4. You probably damaged something already when doing this. If you really want to use the front panel again i suggest you bring it to a PC shop.

Thanks a lot benny. I'll go with Option 4, as it would be safe.

Ok well ive got a few more options for you that you could try. But before i let you in on that i need to know the make and model number of your motherboard.

Right theres a few options you can do.

- Reset bios (you got 2 ways to do this)

- Reinstall chipset drivers

- Flash BIOS (do it wrong you can go shopping for new motherboard, no joke)

Reset bios:
option 1: To do this you can either enter your bios and look at the left side and choose set to (factory) default options or set to optimized options or something in that general direction.

option 2: This will require you to open up your PC. So first unplug all cables like power, mouse, keyboard and what ever else you got. Then press the powerbutton a few times so all the remaining static power has been removed from your PC. On the back of your power supply unit if there is a switch flip it so you are sure that you wont have any power running through your PC. Right now we got that out of the way openup your PC case (best way to do this is to put the PC on its side. Underneath your RAM and next to that square heatsink on the motherboard you will find your CMOS battery i want you to remove it. And keep it out for about 20 seconds (this removes the source of power that saves your bios settings)

After you cleared the CMOS battery and put it back in boot up your PC again and go into your BIOS and put the settings back to default factory settings or optimized settings or anything similar. And see if this fixed it. (dont forget to save your settings, usually F10)

Reinstall chipset drivers
Depending on which operating system you run. Go get the latest chipset drivers from the MSI website (select your OS first though) : http://www.msi.com/product/mb/760GM-P21--FX-.html#/?div=Driver&os=All (http://www.msi.com/product/mb/760GM-P21--FX-.html#/?div=Driver&os=All)

Flash BIOS
This option is the most dangerous thing when it comes to software. As this is one of the few things that can actually brick your motherboard. Meaning if you flash your BIOS the wrong way you can go shopping for a new motherboard. As the other one will become useless and you wont be able to save it.

This will require you to have a floppy disk drive, a floppy disk 1,44MB, the BIOS flash files (usually a .BIN and .EXE but you got a MSI mobo so you will have a .HD0 and .EXE)

But before i continue here i want you to try the other options first. As this is the last method i know about.

Thanks a lot benny for all that information and guide. I already tried the option 1, a week ago but i tried that again today and still no luck.
I also tried installing chipset drivers and that too didn't worked out. I am afraid that i will go with the option of Flashing BIOS, instead i am going to use USB hub now.

I wouldn't recommend flashing the BIOS to get hardware running that's likely been destroyed anyway. I'd suggest you get a new front panel instead.
