Title: Drift Races - Tutorial
Post by: Zamaroht on August 27, 2008, 08:16:06 PM
With the introduction of the third version of the racing script into the server, we have added drift races. What are they? How do they work? How can I win? Those are questions I'll try to explain in the rest of the post.

What is a drift race?
Basically, it's a type of race where the racers showoff their drifting skills. Here in littlewhitey's server, we added the drift races as a point-to-point race, with a specific route to follow from one point to another marked with checkpoints. When you drift, depending on the length, angle and speed of the drift, you will get points. Those points get accumulated throughout the race and at the end of the race the racer with most points wins. The race ends when the 3 players cross the finish line.

How much points do I get on each situation?
If your drifting angle is bigger than 12º, you will earn points. The amount of the points will depend on the speed that you are going to, the size of the drifting angle, and the multiplier. Once you finished your drift, you have 3 seconds to chain in another drift into the same one, else it will simply get added to your total score, and the next drift will start from 0 points.

What are multipliers?
The multiplier is a number that appears in the bottom left side of the screen when you are doing a drift race. Your single drift score gets multiplied by the multiplier, so if you make a drift with X1 multiplier from which you got 1000 points, you would get 5000 points with an X5 multiplier. You earn multipliers when doing long single drifts. These are the points needed in a single drift to earn the multiplier:

X2 = 2000 points
X3 = 10000 points
X4 = 25000 points
X5 = 65000 points

65000 points in a single drift may sound a bit crazy, but think that for that moment you would have an X4 multiplier, making it easier to get it. While you can increase your multiplier, you can reset it to X1 if you go too slow (less than 32km/h).
It's a good technique to try to make an X5 multiplier at the very start of the race, and then don't even care about making long single drifts.

So, while others are going ahead I can stay back drifting in circles to win?
No actually, if you start going wrong the way you won't be able to make points until you get to the next checkpoint. Also remember, that a fast speed is important for getting more points.

When does the race finish?
When the 3rd one finishes, or after 4 minutes after the 1st one finishes, or after 15 minutes if no-one finished. This doesn't mean that you have to finish between the first three positions, you may be last but have the most points, and when the race finishes you would have won. Actually finishing first or second isn't so great, as you would be finished while everybody else is still drifting. The best position to finish would be third, as you would have drifted during all the race, and all along the track.

Sounds cool, can I see a video of it in action?

Well I hope this is useful for you and helps you to understand how all this thingy works :)

Great job on the new race script. Much more funner than the speed races and it allows for the chance to use a larger variety of cars to win!

Very well done Zam!!
I (for myself) got bored badly by the usual races at some point (probly due to the high amount of reports for rammers/shooters at races it kinda spoiled my personal fun.. but that's just me). But this drifting script really got me into racing again. :)
Got 2nd in 2 out of 3 races yesterday. Drifting rocks! :)/me hands Zam a bag filled with finest cookies

I didn't think this was possible in the current version of SA:MP, so I must say a huge well done to you Zam. Absolutely amazing script, really enjoying it (I came 2nd in the first drift, came 1st in the second one).
