esata/usb SSD stick problem
« on: July 30, 2011, 01:49:10 PM »
Hey guys,

Ive got a 64gig USB/e-sata SSD stick (no not ur normal USB stick)
Heres a picture:

It works perfectly using USB 2.0 port but when i want to plug it into my e-sata port it doesnt show up on 'My Computer' and it also doesnt show up in disk management. The sata cable from the e-sata port is plugged into my motherboard so thats not the problem either.

My motherboard does have a Jmicron usb controller so i might need to update drivers on that. But if anyone else has a solution let me know please.

i havent tested the port no, but its a simple cable from the port to an internal Sata port (its basicly the same) And i havent tested it on a different PC cuz none of the PCs or Laptops in my house have eSata ports lol..

I didnt buy it i got it for free. Plus SSD drives are simply better, faster more efficient and last longer than ur normal HDDs. Another reason why i want this to work is because i want to install Windows 7 on it so it will boot faster and work faster.

Btw ive already got 2 external HDDs 1x 500gig, 1x 1TB both storage.
And 3 internal HDDs 1x160gig (OS, and programs) 1x 500gig (games) and 1x 2TB (Storage)

I dont need another HDD with massive space as ive still got plenty to fill. What i need now is to have my windows work faster.. And this SSD stick connected to my eSata port is the way to do that.

Anyway. Its still not showing up in Device manager, my computer and in Diskmagament. Ive changed it from IDE to AHCI and still doesnt work either. Installed and uninstalled drivers alot now to.. Im clueless on what the problem might be. As the SSD stick does work using the USB side of it.

The only thing that stands out to me is that for a internal drive you need power. I looked it up, and unless your MB/stat port can provide power, you need to hook it up diffrently for it to work

if you have a non-powered eSATA port, then you can plug it in and also connect the USB cable to provide power. You'll still get the maximum speeds.
http://www.digitalversus.com/maxell-ssd-32-gb-p728_6456_407.html Page has a lil more info on it.

Although, i could be completely wrong and may be thinking of other things. If i am let me know and i will delete this useless post...lol

well thats a different USB/eSata stick than i have, Those have caps on it and mine slides out the USB side or eSata side, Plus theres no power connection to be found anywhere on the device.

And when i slide out the eSata connector, the USB side slides into the device even further so theres no way i could access it unless i openup the casing which im obviously not going to do...

EDIT:
OK ive just tested it on my moms laptop through eSata and it works on her laptop. So the device isnt broken on the eSata end. Plus ive checked the box it came in and it doesnt need external power.

Fair enough. As i say this is a bit new to me lol And without the device in front of me i have no idea if it had external power supply connectors, or extra ports, etc... sorry (the pics on the web suck!)

I did find this out:

The one caveat is compatibility. For the moment this flash drive will only work with the increasingly popular USB/eSATA combo ports found on higher-end laptops. Your basic PC eSATA connector simply won't recognise it, unless you send it to Maxell for a firmware update. Newer models supposedly have this update installed, but our sample didn't. Worth bearing in mind if you intend to use this drive with a basic PC eSATA port.

May explain why it works in a laptop not a pc atm. Possibly see if their is a firmware update, or instructions on how to do this.

Also found this (no idea if this is what you are doing)

unfortunately there are not many PC motherboards that support this standard too. This means for the regular PC user that a little trick is required to run this drive in eSATA mode. You will have to also connect the USB cable to get power and the device detected. Good today’s standard Laptops should have no problem to get the SSD running in eSATA mode since most of the new Laptops use an eSATA controller that supports the power-over-eSATA standard.

The Box where the Stick was in clearly states no external power is needed (plus its impossble to connect a USB to it anyway once the eSata is in the port) And ive got one of those cables (ive actually got 3 of em lol)

The next best bet is to see if i can get a firmware update as u said. Ill go try that as soon as i can.
