Make sure you are using the newest version of SA-MP. Download link is in this thread http://forum.littlewhiteys.co.uk/index.php/topic,21564.0.html

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling, now won't let me install.

Error opening file c:\blah\blah\gta\gtaweap3.ttf

When I got that error I restarted the PC and tried again. The error didn't appear after that.

Click on ignore when you get that error.

And make sure the version ends with 7 not Z.
