Need help
« on: March 07, 2012, 03:57:00 PM »
Hey guys

I have reinstalled windows 7 ultimate 64 bit. But now one of my harddrives is not recognized anymore in the bios and at My Computer. So ive flashed the bios with previous versions of the bios. Ive tried different SATA cables and different ports on the motherboard. Ive also switched the CMOS jumper back and forth. None of this worked until i removed the CMOS battery. Now it shows up the entire time it doesnt dissappear anymore but as soon as i put back the battery it dissappears.

Does any of you have any idea what the solution to this problem could be?

Could be because of bad CMOS battery. I've read it somewhere and also one of my friend had that issue, because of bad CMOS battery.

OK so ive replaced it. And it seemed to work last night but when i started up the PC again today the drive was not there. Ive got no fucking clue as to what it is and its starting to really piss me off.

The drive works fine on another PC and ive formatted it during a windows install process on that PC but never installed anything on it. I just formatted it and deleted the partitions so that there was 500 gigs of unallocated space.

My next plan is to get rid of the other 2 harddrives ive got and only hook up the not recognizable harddrive and see whats happening then.

Have you changed the motherboard? if so which one did you take?

Try limiting your hdd transfer speed to 300 or 150 Mb/s. By doing this your HDD will be compatible with the motherboard.
Put the jumper like this:
7 5 3 1
: || : :
8 6 4 2

If this won't work either, then try removing the jumper. What kind of sata is it? II?

The Motherboard: MSI 870a-G54
http://nl.msi.com/product/mb/870A-G54.html

Harddrive:  Samsung HD502HJ
Couldnt find the website for the harddrives because Seagate bought the Harddrive division of Samsung.

Anyway this drive worked perfectly before the reinstal of windows. And it has worked perfectly for over 1,5 years. I bought the HDD together with the motherboard and they both worked perfectly together. So i dont understand why it doesnt work anymore now.

BTW ive got no idea where that jumper is located.  The only jumper i know is the CMOS jumper which is only 3 pins and 2 of those pins are in use by the jumper.

Numerous times.

What ive done so far step by step.

Reinstalled windows. And installed the rest i always had.

Hooked up the 2 Harddrives that have everything (Steam, and other crap)

Installed all drivers.

Noticed that the HDD was missing all the sudden eventhough it was there before.

Went into bios checking if everything was ok. Then i flashed the BIOS to latest version which did not help either.

Reset the bios a dozen times. Removed CMOS battery to reset aswell, and moved the jumper to see if that did any good. Also tried different SATA ports and different sata cables, and different power cables. But none worked on the HDD.

Restarted PC. HDD was back, put on a smile. Went to bed happy.

Woke up turned on PC. Saw no Steam HDD present. Went into a pissed off mood...

Tried everything again. But still no luck as to getting the HDD back on.

What format does the disk has? Make sure it's not other than NTFS, because I've been said that there are some incompatibilities betwen w7 and FAT32.
Does it recongize the disk when you are running Partition Magic or such program?

If its not recognized in BIOS under either NTFS or FAT32 or FAT it wont be recognized in windows at all so theres no need to use one of those programs.

Besides using FAT32 is pointless because these drives are standard NTFS as NTFS allows the biggest file transfers. FAT32 only allows up to like 512mb per file transfer. When NTFS allows much higher like 4gig plus. Considering the Drive is used for Steam its save to say that some files are larger than 4 gigs and is NTFS...

Update 1:

I just hooked up the HDD that wont work onto the PC and unplugged the other ones.

It wont spin up. But heres the weird part. It does work on the other PC ive got. And the HDD has always worked before right before i reinstalled windows. So im going to look into this now.

Update 2:
I had all harddrives connected and powered up the PC. The faulty harddrive was still not working. But i unplugged the powercable and reconnected it and the HDDs started to spin up. I then restarted the PC and the harddrive was still spinning because it was still getting power.

As soon as i shut down the PC and restarted it the HDD did not get power.

My best guess is that the BIOS is somehow flawed. And i will contact MSI about this problem. Ill post back on the progress.

Took me 1,5 weeks but i have fixed the problem.

Turns out that the problem was between my Southbridge (chipset SB850) and my HD502HJ Harddrive.

Did a Firmware update on my harddrive and went from 1AJ100E4 to 1AJ100E5.

Harddrive is now recognized again and even boots up after the PC has been turned off completely.

Now i need to wait and see if it stays that way!
