Opeth-harvest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxaFANthouM)

I'm sorry, but that's not death metal. I know Opeth is categorized as a death metal band, but this song is a bad representative.. Better example would have been "Deliverance, Demon of the Fall or even Master's Apprentices".

Nightwish with Tarja was awesome too. Now maybe not, but it 's not bad at all.
Offspring? Old albums are great! Smash, Americana etc. It used to be one of my favorite bands.
Muse... Can't agree. Maybe with new album, is just sucks. But listen to old albums when they played harder. Or see concert from Wembley - HAARP (Knights of Cydonia<3).
Linkin Park, I used to be a fan of this band. It was the first band I was addicted to, 9 years ago. And the same as with Offspring and Nightwish, old albums - HT and Meteora are great.

These topics exist for people who like the music. What's teh point in having a discussion if one of the two parties don't like the kind of music. It would be the same if I would try to tell you that apples suck, while at the same time you think apples are the best food in the world. Pointless.

One tip: de gustibus et coloribus non disputandum est, read it. After that, if you are not able to stay on topic and respect people's choice of music, don't bother posting here. Post it somewhere else. This thread exists for people who like Rock or Heavy Music and all of its subgenres, not for people who don't like the music to pop in their heads just to say, that Rock and Heavy music sucks..

eDiT: elof, 'Walk this Way' by Aerosmith => absolutely great choice! lol. They play that song in the speakers of the Rock 'n Roller Coaster in DisneyLand, over and over again, rode that baby for HOURS :)

Hello. I was reading some posts by Jolly Rancher. You've got it mostly right.. But let me continue on a deeper scale.

Nu Metal - A genre of metal that uses negative lyrics, and is usually crossed with rap or grunge. Some good examples are Slipknot, Mudvayne, and Linkin Park.
Black Metal - A genre of metal that usually originates from Norway. It uses an extremely fast tempo, distorted guitar riffs, and often times the vocals sound like high-pitch shrieks. Hey, it's always freezing cold in Norway.. Why wouldnt you create a black metal band? Some examples are Cradle of Filth and Emperor.
Death Metal - A genre of metal that also uses heavily distorted guitars. But unlike black metal, they use very deep screams and growls. Death metal is known to use blast beat drumming, which is a high paced series of ons & offs. Some examples are Behemoth, Disarmonia Mundi, and Suicide Silence.
Deathcore - A genre of music that crosses death metal with metalcore. We will talk about metalcore later. Deathcore uses some deep growls from death metal, yet also incorporates yells and screams from metalcore. Palm-muted riffing is very common in deathcore, and they are well known for their intense breakdowns. Not too many guitar solos. Some examples are Lamb of God, Neaera, and Whitechapel.
Emocore - Yes, emocore is an actual genre of music. They are much like Post-Hardcore music, but use confessional lyrics, and lighter guitar riffs. A lot of falsetto singing is involved. I'd say this genre borderlines with rock. Some examples are Paddock Park and Underoath.
Hardcore - This is the genre that most bands build off of. They simply replace the "hard" with "death", "emo", or even "metal". This is the new age genre of metal that really started it all (other than Thrash).  Hardcore uses a fast tempo, and originally evolved from Punk. It is heavier, richer, and uses harsher vocals than Punk. Some examples are Hatebreed, Converge, and The Chariot.
Industrial - Industrial metal is not as common as the other genres. This genre uses traditionally heavy guitar riffs, and harsh vocals. But they incorporate synthesizer. And also, their tempo is faster. Not as fast as Black Metal, but still, quite fast. Some examples are Ministry and Static-X.
Metalcore - Ah. This genre is by far the best in my opinion. Originating in the 1990s, this band is a cross of Heavy / Extreme metal, and Hardcore. It can have both intense guitar solos as well as heavy breakdowns. A lot of the time metalcore brings melody into the picture by having choruses to their songs. Some examples of this are As I Lay Dying, Bullet for my Valentine, Soilwork and Trivium.
Post-Hardcore - Also evolving from the punk scene, Post-Hardcore is a cross between metalcore, punk, and experimental rock. They usually have very loud bass lines, and there is no definition for lyric style. All sorts of lyrics are used. Post-Hardcore is usually half screaming, half falsetto singing. Some examples of this are A Day to Remember, Silverstein, and Story of the Year.
Power Metal - Long hair is a must. This genre of music combines speed metal with heavy metal. They often incorporate symphonic context, and almost all Power Metal bands have a keyboardist. Lots of Power Metal bands sing about medieval times. Some examples are Dragonforce, Nightwish, and Blind Guardian.
Thrash Metal -  Last but not least. This is the genre that steered away from traditional "Heavy" metal. This genre started it all. Bands such as Pantera, Slayer and Anthrax. Same heavy metal style, yet they experimented with harsh vocals, and a faster tempo.
Thanks for reading

Call it what you want, I won't mind. I dig this melodic "emo"-crap a lot. :)
Excuse the selection of videos, but I have to deal with some massive youtube censorship (BMI, EMG and whatnot copyright infringements) over here in good ol' Germany, and these are the best I could find.

Uh.
Leads to the impression nowadays more money can be earned with Dubstep than with Rock (not saying I'd think so, not at all). I'd prefer the old Korn over this any given time.

And since there's hardly any links to modern rockmusic to be expected from me, here goes the v3 oldie routine..

Portishead - The Rip (http://www.mtv.de/videos/19738864-portishead-the-rip.html)

Hope the link works for everyone, offical video is blocked on German Youtube as usual. :-*
Is awesomeness like this still being produced lately? Feel free to lure me to music as outstanding as this. :D

This was stunning. The intensity and especially the way the tension was built up till it exploded at the last chorus was unreal. This side of Disturbed I've never seen until now.

Oh, this reminds me of another excellent cover from Disturbed. I like both this and the original version by Genesis, but Disturbed's one brings in the much needed aggressiveness. I think the message of the song is more topical now than ever..

eheh indeed, they surprised me too with this excellent work: Draiman's voice here is absolutely perfect, i love how it turns from clear and smooth into more aggressive and rough, creating that climax effect that makes the song sound somehow imperious.

Also the Genesis's cover is cool, even if in this case i keep preferring the original version (Genesis are Genesis! :) )
Sadly yes, the message is always topical after all these years and so it will keep being...

Nice job Falk3n!

Like you mentioned the sound quality isn't that good and sadly in the first two videos your guitar tracks kinda get lost in the mix. Perhaps you could've turned the backing tracks down a bit.

The sound is more clear in the last video though and it has some nice clean playing there as well and it sounds cool. I'm not sure whether it's your guitar tuning being slightly off or if there's something wrong with your grip because there's definitely something a bit out of tune, especially when you play chords. These are not major things but wanted to let you know instead you missed them yourself :)

All in all, nicely done and it was pretty solid at times. Keep on practicing, a fine hobby you've got there. ;)

Rly thanks for your reply, mate. I use Guitar Rig 5, and the sound comes from my PC, that's why it can't be clean and perfect. I must buy an amp. As you said, there is a bad sound comming exactly on the chords. The PC cannot exactly output the right sound, which is a big minus.

Ah, right that explains much. Despite the sound Guitar Rig 5 is a useful program though, I think I've got a copy lying around somewhere too. It came with a MIDI synth I bought, along with bunch of other programs by Native Instruments. Good stuff.

Anyway hopefully you'll get an amp soon so we'll be able to hear you play with a slightly better sound :)

Mate, it was just the same with me. Listened only Metallica, sometimes Guns & Roses, Slayer... never listened to something harder. These metalcore bands will never get the glory of Metallica, for example :) But I got addicted to it and can't stop listen to it now... this inspires me a lot. I don't think anyone can take Metallica's throne anytime soon... Altough for me they are few steps behind of Iron Maiden, which is the greatest band of all time. But i don't see they are in danger on top of their business :P

If what you're afraid of eventually happens, make sure you start with Mayhem >:D

Pantera is/was the 'heaviest' heavy metal band ever imo. Vulgar is my fav. album of theirs,

Dime was truly one of the all time greats, he made that band.

Great song from the recent Stratovarius' albums. I often listen to this, glad to see there are people doing the same!

Talking about "recent" Stratovarius songs, I relaunch with:

Under flaming skies

These songs from stratovarius are for having a break time lol, honestly i don't like at its new albums. Just some of their songs like Unbreakable of Infernal Maze.

This one is one of my favorite songs from the old stratovarius lmL

Sure thing, the first songs are great, but that was a totally different sound, until came Kotipelto at vocals and they adopted the classic Stratovarius sound which is more based on the "speed"

Anyways Future Shock rocks  8)

I also love Madness strikes at midnight, Hills have eyes and Dreamspace from that period (but also the others are good)

Primal Fear are perfect:

Also listening to a prog band i've discovered recently, Porcupine Tree:
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mBQgy-UiFU#)

This is not "easy" music to listen to tho, same as the early Genesis

I'll check these out, but i listen to pretty much every type of Metal music except for heavy and death metal. They don't seem attractive to me at all, alternative is my favourite.

You might've heard of Stiched Up Heart, Sabaton, Xandria, Semblant, Unleash the Archers etc. This is the hardest i can go with.

Here's some Alternative Metal:

Halestorm

I miss the misery, Love bites (so do I), Mayhem, Daughters of Darkness, Sick Individual, Mz Hyde, I get off.... check some of these. :)

Porcupine Tree is one of my favs at the moment. I urge you to check out their albums Deadwing and In Absentia. Both are true cornerstone albums of modern prog rock.

Arriving Somewhere But Not Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbWhpfXisZw#)

The Sound of Muzak (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hp0OXICuZek#)

The bands mastermind Steven Wilson also does solo stuff. It's slightly different and maybe even a bit more "harder" to listen to but still amazing nonetheless. Wilson is considered a real musical genius in the music circles, especially in the UK but sadly he is very underrated by the public, my guess is it's because for most people his songs need to be listened multiple times before you start understanding the hidden beauty. Here are two of his works:

Drive Home (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycYewhiaVBk#)

The Raven That Refused To Sing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4XevlloPY4#)

Thanks for the hints Darfy!

I've already listened to the whole In absentia album and also their first works, but since you need to listen to this music several times before you can "absorb" it, i still need some more sessions.

If i'm right In absentia is the album from which P.T. started experimenting a harder sound

Haha thanks and you're welcome, I actually had an urge to share this song simply because it's completely nuts. Complex music is something that deeply interests me and this song is easily the most difficult stuff to play I've heard in a while. I'm learning this track on drums at the moment, the so called "chorus" is nothing too hard apart from a few odd poly-rhythmic patterns, but the verse with the slap guitar thingy is just insane, despite that it's all in 4/4 (which is rather unusual for these guys) but the fast foot triplets make it extremely hard.. Maybe in a few months...

I was gonna post another compilation of me songs in the Hiphop section when I realised I have been spamming that section for a while so ya here I am :P (I love sharing my music). Alright I hate the metal genre but I do like a few rock bands beside the most known (ACDC/Queen/Nirvana). I am more into alternative/hard/punk rock. Don't be surprised if what I shared is actually pretty famous cause I am really no specialist lol.

Three Days Grace - Animal I Have Become
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqds0B_meys (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqds0B_meys)

Three Days Grace - Pain

Three Days Grace - I Hate Everything About You
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8ekz_CSBVg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8ekz_CSBVg)

Enough Three days grace for now although I'd share all their songs if I could :(. Those are the most famous ones.

Breaking Benjamin - Dear Agony

Breaking Benjamin - Anthem Of The Angels

Breaking Benjamin - Diary of Jane

Time for 30 seconds to mars

Thirty Seconds to Mars - "Closer to the Edge"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4zigrgH-_k (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4zigrgH-_k)

Thirty Seconds to Mars - Kings and Queens
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSiTrGCAbt8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSiTrGCAbt8)

Thirty Seconds to Mars - "This is War"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMAVLXk9QWA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMAVLXk9QWA)

I also love pretty much all 30 seconds to mars songs. Now it is time for the jackpot, the greatest ever rock/and the rest (lol, they tried almost everything) band, in my opinion, Linkin Park. I know each and every song they released (That's what you call a die hard fan :D). And yes I love all their albums indiscriminately haters not only the earliest >:(!

Bleed It Out (Official Video) - Linkin Park (This song gives me goosebumps mayneee)

Ya I like it a lot, thanks man! It kinda reminds me of some Green day songs. And about the linkin park songs, know it, know it and know it  ;) and love em all especially given up (Unlike most people I find that Minutes To Midnight is actually their best album. I love the bitter-sweet ambiance or mood most of the songs bring out. Also bleed it out is a goddamn masterpiece, this shit had me and my boys jumping when we first heard it  ;D! Good times  :-\...

I was gonna share guilty all the same, since Rakim the god mc (yes ladies and gentlemen) was featured on it but I was set on avoiding their latest album (which is very good in my opinion, I loved A line in the sand and Rebellion) since it received a hell lotta criticism and I DID NOT WANT TO GIVE NO BAIT TO ATTRACT NO HATERS, u know wadda mean  ;D :P.

Anyways thanks for the suggestions again and take care man!

Awake is an incredible album. It has this certain type of dark atmosphere to it that lasts throughout the whole album. Erotomania (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3JQyV4dUKM) is my long-time favorite, but honestly I don't think it has a single bad song. Well actually the same applies to all Dream Theater albums that were made prior to Portnoy's departure, apart from the one they made back in Majesty days. The new albums with Mangini sure do have their moments, Breaking All Illusions is a wonderful song for example, but overall the albums are definitely weaker. Mangini is a great metal drummer and has a lot of merits but especially on live DVDs he lacks feel and groove, badly. It's almost like the playing is coming from a drum machine rather than a human. Plus that Portnoy always was the front man of the band and in live he had his own little show going on in the back constantly and it was fun watching him do his stuff. You should check out their 20th anniversary DVD Score (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLnghhxXtlM&list=PL-SCEpLztqHrQQPEn3NShqMopcjmykkdP), if you haven't already. I'd say it's their best live performance, LaBrie nailing every note and they have an orchestra in the back and all. Good days, DT will never be the same again..

yeah i agree with you, Portnoy had more "soul" and he's always been a funny guy, but i think also Mangini is a nice person and has great skills.
The early albums are of course something special, but a good thing is that i've found a remarkable improvement in the last albums ("A dramatic turn of events" and "Dream Theater") compared to the previous ones. Not considering the very last "The astonishing" because i only listened to it once and i don't remember the songs yet.

The live you mentioned was good indeed, i also liked the Live scenes from New York (really long!) and in particular Live at Luna Park, which i got in blu ray and totally enjoyed in HD: here LaBrie's voice surprised me, he managed to hit some notes he haven't tried in the last years and it was well performed overall.
Looking forward to buying the last one "Breaking the fourth wall"

Dynazty - The Human Paradox (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_8y-lmm08E#)

Heard this one on the radio the other day and even though I rarely listen to metal as straightforward as this, it struck me right away. The chorus is just sooo catchy and epic and the vocalist is just phenomenal. I'm stunned they don't have any more views than this because their style is really suitable for a pretty wide audience.

@Quickplay: I've been aware of Winery Dogs ever since they started it in 2012, but after years and years of listening to DT, in some strange way I wasn't comfortable with MP being in a different band so I guess I never gave these guys a change. A while ago I bumped into them and thought oh what the heck and for my surprise I found out their stuff is not bad at all, I must admit. It does feel strange to see MP play in a trio, using a small kit and playing less complex music, but damn the energy he gives out is really something. The other two are pretty incredible as well, Sheenan the bassist pulls off some pretty killer licks and Kotzen the vocalist/guitarist is just outstanding, he has pretty unique style as he never uses a pick. And what a voice, you could say it's almost an exact copy of Chris Cornell's. Check them out!!

yeah same happened to me, indeed i never really listened to them.
The singer voice indeed reminds me of Cornell ehe, even if i prefer Chris.

Talking about Portnoy being in a trio, have you ever heard about the Liquid Trio Experiment?
The story behind this experiment is curious: it started as a quartet, the "Liquid tension experiment", which was a kind of Dream Theater 2.0 since the line up was formed by Portnoy, Rudess and Petrucci (according to MP's intentions it should have been Steve Morse if i remember right, but he was busy)...only the bassist wasn't one of them.
They recorded a few albums, one of their famous songs is Acid rain, which DT sometimes played live in their concerts.

Reading on wikipedia about them i've found a funny story about one of their concerts, when there was a problem with Rudess' keyboards...so the others started improvising and they ended up playing each others instruments lol (you can read about this here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/When_the_Keyboard_Breaks:_Live_in_Chicago))
I guess you can say that these guys can't get caught unprepared!
If you've never seen Rudess playing guitar or Portnoy playing the bass, then head to the end of this video:

Heh actually I found out about Liquid Tension Experiment before Dream Theater. I used to listen to King Crimson a lot back in the day and ended up checking if any of them were doing other projects and found out Tony Levin was in this all-star group called LTE. Universal Mind caught me immediately and I thought to myself "damn I want more of that fast and incredible playing" so that's how I got to know about DT.

I liked the first two LTE albums equally but the third they made without Petrucci just lacks something.... maybe Petrucci? ;D

Never bumped into that clip before, but more importantly never knew that the Wizard can rock the guitar too! Once you master the fingerwork I guess it makes no difference what instrument you apply it on ;D ;D

Symphony X - Oculus ex Inferni & Set The World On Fire (The Lie of Lies)

What's Symphony X? Progressive metal, traditional heavy metal, power metal, neoclassical metal and symphonic metal put together. Sounds fun! What's also fun and fascinating (apart from the great playing) is the interesting themes their albums have. Most of their albums are concept albums and they deal with stories from epic poems such as Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost and Homer's Odyssey or ancient mythology, astrology and other known literature in general as well.

Oculus ex Inferni and Set The World On Fire are the albums first two tracks but even as split into two they make an excellent combo and you could think they're just one song. The finale at 7:40 is super badass.

Deep Purple - Time For Bedlam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfmXD90VWsg#)
New single from the legendary group Deep Purple. Pretty dark lyrics for their style but this definitely takes me back to their stuff from the 70's. Vintage vibes!!

Well done man, let's keep this topic alive. Long live Rock & Roll!!! \m/
Some of those songs are in my Disturbed's fav list indeed.

Now, some classic Heavy metal sound from pioneers of the genre: Judas Priest

From their last, awesome album:
Firepower (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QtjdDiMLVg)

Here's a freaking old one instead, but listen to it you won't regret it (@Runey: i bet you'll like this more if i got your tastes)
Victim of Changes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKSU1W0ZUmQ)

Furthermore, in these 2-3 months of lockdown Spotify made me discover a lot of great bands i would have never know about otherwise.

I'll just link something random:

Arena - Double Vision (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icBhog4yXj4)
Arena - The shattered Room (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eDYLwvI5T4)
(Everytime i post something progressive Darfy comes to my mind, where is he?  :'()
Riverside - Vale of Tears (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=001IMO53JwY)

Fasten your belts, this is Heavy Trash!
Xentrix - Questions (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAbGfhy_ooU)

your turn qp =)
Lol i was going to reply then noticed the tiny p.s.  ;D

Metal all the way man \m/

I'm really delighted by the immense portion of songs and quality of music in your post.
Judas Priest definitely rockin' it, loved the songs you posted although "Victim of Changes" was quite familiar to me. :)

I'd like to share some more of Xentrix! (thanks for the heads up =)

Nobody's Perfect (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OnSKPAlaeU)
The Bitter End (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEuZOvEtas4)
For Whose Advantage? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRPFAqUBRqY)

For whose advantage is a very good album indeed.

And i remember the first time i heard Die MF die. Someone put it as soundtrack of a samp frag video years ago  :D

Since you like Disturbed i'll post 2 songs maybe less famous:
Haunted (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLgPNilXHM4)
Hell (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvAmUKgH7HI)

Here's something from Annihilator:
Alison Hell (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTYHYglem-M)
The fun palace (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_k8gLyE0jqQ)
Knight jumps Queen (like Bass intros?) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpCefrmlXJQ)

Lastly, some random rocking songs:
I would love to - Steve Vai (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJregFXh8EU)
Technical Difficulties - Racer X (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkoPfV5tjWo)
Mission Profile - Threshold (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZadzWLvMbqM)
and Diamond Head, the band who inspired Metallica, Megadeth and even Iron Maiden (and whose riffs they copy pasted!)
Sucking my love (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOpHDRgbeIo)
let's see what songs from Metallica, Megadeth and Maiden you can recognize in this one :D
